“Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.” John 16:31-32 NIV
So why is it that if the disciples believed that Christ was from God and that He was returning to Him, would they flee from Him, leaving Him alone? The disciples did not understand that there was a stop along the way for Christ on His return to the Father. That stop was a trip to Calvary, a journey required of Him that mankind might be removed from the bondage to sin. It was needed that we might stand before the Heavenly Father, made righteous by the blood shed by His Son on the cross. The disciples could not grasp this even though Christ had specifically told them directly He would die on three separate occasions.
A stop along the way of His return to the Father. This is the plan which leads to our salvation. How much grace, love and mercy has been bestowed upon us.
