The World's Hatred

"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.” John 15:18 NIV

Quickly, Jesus shifts from talking about loving to speaking of hatred. We need to understand that in following Jesus we are not going to receive lots of approval and accolades from this world. In fact, to the contrary we will be hated. Why is that? It is because the world first hated our Master. The people of the world do not want to hear about self-sacrifice. That is not what the world teaches. Nor do people wish to acknowledge and take responsibility for their sinfulness.

If the world does not hate you, you may want to question your effectiveness in attempting to share the Good News. Some hatred toward Christians is mild, resulting in ignoring, name calling and such, but the hatred can become severe, possibly leading to the ultimate sacrifice of one’s life.

Just remember that the world hated your Lord and Master first.
