Greater Than I

If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. John 14-28b NIV

The disciples did love Jesus, but their sadness at the thought of His departure was at its core selfish in that it thought about them and not about their Master. Jesus was going to return to the Father! In losing a close one to us, do we feel sadness at losing them or do we feel gladness that they are now with the Lord? We might feel both.

Jesus saying that the Father was greater than Him does not take away from the divineness, the deity of Christ. Rather it speaks of the fact that in the divine nature there is a subordination of the Son to the Father. The Son became subordinate in taking on flesh, and in dying to save us. Are you not glad that the Son is subordinate in the divine nature?
