I used to be easily overwhelmed by all the things that had to be done.

As a single parent, I felt everything was my responsibility...working a full-time job, cooking, cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping and spending time teaching, helping and enjoying my children.

Long ago a man called Moses was in even more overwhelming circumstances.

God had given Moses the responsibility of caring for and leading millions of His people as they wandered in the desert. Part of this responsibility was to judge disputes and remind the people of the statutes and laws given by God.

Here’s what the Bible says in Judges 18:13-17:

The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening.

When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, "What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?"

Moses answered him, "Because the people come to me to seek God's will.”

Moses' father-in-law replied, "What you are doing is not good.”

Then he gave Moses some very good advice for fulfilling the responsibilities God had given him without becoming overwhelmed...share the load.

Moses’ father-in-law advised, “If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied." (verse 23)

Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said. (verse 24)

It is never good to try to do everything alone.

I eventually learned to ask my Father God for help and He is always faithful to answer my cry and provide what I need. And sometimes He even provides before I realize the need or forget to ask.

God gives us responsibilities at home, at school, at work, but He never expects us to carry the full burden. When we are overwhelmed, He supplies everything we need...help and rest and satisfaction in doing a job well.

He will always help us share the load.
