“Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.” John 12:7-8 NIV
The perfume which Mary used to anoint the feet of the Lord might have been remaining from what would have been used when Lazarus was placed in the tomb. Obviously, it no longer was required for that reason. Here it was a reminder of that which was forthcoming, although it was only known and understood by Christ at that time.
Christ certainly was not downplaying the importance of service to the poor with His comment here. He was just trying to remind those present here that they would have ample times in which they could provide for the poor, but that His time with them was drawing to a close.
We have the presence of the Holy Spirit indwelling us to guide us in what the Lord tells us. On our own it could be quite difficult to discern all which the Lord speaks to us, but the Spirit guides us that we may understand that which the Lord speaks to our heart.
