But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages." John 12:4-5 NIV

Why should anything extravagant been spared at the dinner honoring the One who had raised a man from death? Mary was showing her true love for her Lord, though she did not understand the implications behind her deed. She just knew in here heart that there was nothing too good that could be done for Him.

To the contrary, Judas was concerned more about the money bag, which provided him access to funds which he could use for his own selfish purpose. Masking his true thoughts behind his comment might have fooled others present, but the Lord knew his true heart, but did not call him out on his hypocrisy.

Be careful in that which you say. Speak truth and do that which pleases the Lord. Don’t hold selfish motives behind deceiving words. We will all be held accountable for that which we utter.
