The Burial Cloths

The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. John 11:44a NIV

Why did not Lazarus remove the burial wrappings before coming out? I would like to offer a few thoughts.

I believe there was an immediateness to the command of Jesus for the man to come out of the table. He was not meant to delay for any reason his appearance before all gathered. When you came to the Lord was there a change in you immediately? It might have been more internal than external at first.

Secondly, the viewers needed to be aware first hand of the fact that this man had been dead, evidenced in part by the burial cloths around him. This man truly had come from death back to life through the words spoken by Jesus Christ. When you first came to Christ I am sure parts of your old “dead” self needed to be removed. Praying, reading God’s word, and fellowshipping with other Christians all play a part in ridding you of the old self.

There was also a further action which needed to be taken by others at the tomb site. When you come to Christ others shall be involved in nurturing you in the maturation process of your new life. God has not meant us to be alone in our walk with Him. We are meant to be with others who also believe in Christ. Truly, we must be and act as the body of Christ
