When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. John 11:20 NIV
Why did not Mary go out with Martha to meet Jesus? I believe it is because Martha was the elder of the two sisters, and the head of the house. Even in this very difficult and troubling time Mary wanted to show honor and respect to her older sister in allowing her to go out first to meet the Lord. I am certain that Mary knew that the Lord would come to see her and most likely believed they would even take Him out to the tomb. There is no way anyone could have known though all that our Lord planned to do.
