Lord God,

I thank you for the gift of sport,

I thank you for blessing us with bodies,

That are capable of great feats of strength, agility, flexibility and endurance,

And through playing sport,

We can glorify you,

And display and celebrate the large diversity of physical abilities and skills,

That you have given to us,

I also thank you that playing sport provides opportunities to develop godly character,

As we learn to build trust and serve particular roles within a team,

As we learn to grow in humility and guard against conceit,

As we learn how to show good sportsmanship and respect opponents,

As we learn about the importance of following rules and obeying our coach,

And as we learn about the importance of hard work and discipline,

In order to achieve our goals,

Yet, even though there is so much value in playing sports,

I thank you that sports can also be a reminder to us,

That we are all running a much more important race in life,

A race that will require hard work and discipline,

As we strive to grow in holiness and turn away from evil,

A race that will require our trust and obedience,

As we continue to follow our true coach Jesus Christ,

A race that will require teamwork,

As we learn to love and grow in fellowship with other believers,

And a race that will require sweat, blood and tears,

As we are called to bear our cross daily and resist temptation,

One day soon, by your grace, we will cross the grand finish line of this race,

Knowing that our victory is secure in Christ,

Then we will receive the prize that never fades,

And forevermore share in your glory.
