The word but at the beginning here is meant to signify that this was in direct response to the trap question given to Jesus to answer.

So what is the significance in our Lord’s action here? No mention is made of what Jesus wrote. He quite possibly was going through the motions as He was inside the temple area and thus He would have been attempting to write on pavement, and with His finger. So the importance lies within the action rather than any words. So what was the purpose here of Jesus’ action. I believe Jesus through His action is telling those who questioned Him that He had no interest in judging the case of this woman. It was a civil matter which had a procedure which needed to be followed. This was the first step in Jesus dealing with the attempted entrapment….a defiance to the action taken by those who brought the woman before Him.

Jesus was in complete control of the situation and knew exactly what to do to handle the situation.
