So we know here that if Jesus had responded by saying not to stone the woman the leaders would have accused Him of ignoring God’s law given through Moses. But what accusation could they bring against Him if He said that the woman should be stoned? Most likely they could have said He was trying to take authority for something which only the Romans were to do, the death of an individual for a crime committed. So they could have then said that Jesus was in opposition to the Roman authority.

 These people really believed that Jesus was trapped. But Jesus took a two step approach to show them that their trap would not work. This is to be seen within the two following writings.
