He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. John 6:59 NIV

That which Christ taught was done in different environments. Sometimes He would speak outside to large throngs of people who would follow after Him. As an example there is the Beatitudes of Matthew 5. Sometimes Christ would teach in the synagogue, where people came to worship. This would mean a smaller sized gathering and His teaching would have most likely come after a reading from the law. So Christ’s teaching about the bread of life could be compared in manner of presentation to a current day pastor presenting a sermon. The similarity stops there though.

I am sure each of Christ’s teachings was presented in the environment in which it was meant to be taught. Christ taught whenever and wherever He deemed it appropriate.
