Jesus gave them this answer: "Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does." John 5:19 NIV

Notice herein that Christ does not consider Himself to be equal to the Father. In Philippians 2:6-10 we read “Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross.”

Jesus could only do that which the Heavenly Father does as they are united as one in purpose. This all might be hard to digest, believing in the trinity of God, but Christ is telling us that He is under the headship of the Father, yet this in no way means He is not God. Such is the mystery of the Holy Trinity.
