and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat." John 5:10 NIV

And with this verse, we see the hearts of the Jewish leaders revealed. The cure of a man who had been imprisoned to his infirmity for 38 years resulted in no sign of joy by these men, no rejoicing with him and those who surrounded him. No, instead they reprimand the man for carrying his mat on a sabbath. This was due to a human law, not one which God had intended. In Jeremiah 17:21 we read “This is what the Lord says: Be careful not to carry a load on the Sabbath day or bring it through the gates of Jerusalem.” The Jewish leaders were quite strict about this and thus included much within it that I am sure God had not intended.

How do you react when you hear of someone miraculously being healed? Do you rejoice, or do you ask why not me or someone close to me? Our heart should be open to rejoicing with those who are healed.
