Immediately Cured

At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, John 5:9 NIV

This miraculous cure was mercifully provided by our Lord and was instantaneous once the man decided that he would attempt to rise. Notice that he did pick up his mat as Christ had told him. This man most likely was poor (evidenced by the fact that there was no one there to help him into the pool). His mat was one of a few things he probably owned and the Lord wanted it to remain in his possession.

Of course, there would be people, especially Jewish leaders who would confront the man on doing so. One who disobeyed this law could be put to death.

Does Jesus ever ask you to do something that seems to you as if it might be detrimental? Do you do as He says anyway, or do you try to “reason” with Him or disregard that which He says? Remember that Christ knows what is best for you. Obey that which He tells you to do.
