Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. John 2:6-7 NIV
In reading these two verses, a couple of questions come to mind. What did any of these servants at the wedding know about Jesus? Secondly, what thoughts went through their minds when Jesus told them to fill the water jars? All we know is that they obeyed His request, filling each of the jars to the brim.
So here, behind the scene from all the wedding guests we have servants filling water jars with somewhere between 120 and 180 gallons of water. Did it take them awhile to perform this task? We have no idea.
What do we do when we hear a request asked of us by the Lord through the Holy Spirit? Do we just obey and do it, or do we analyze it for what we perceive to be reasonableness? If we truly believe the request is given through the Holy Spirit, there should be no hesitation except if we don’t necessarily know how to perform the request. We need to have simple faith and do as we are directed in God’s ways. The Lord is truly pleased when His servant is obedient to His request.
