On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. John 2:1-2 NIV

The third day here most likely refers back to from the day of the calling of Phillip by Christ, which is the last reference to a time. Jesus’ mother quite possibly was a close friend of the family of the couple being married, as she was already at the wedding site, most likely assisting with preparations.

And here Mary first sees her son with His disciples, beginning the mission for which He came to earth. I wonder what excitement or anticipation might have been in the heart of Mary, seeing her son for the first time in this manner.

Up to this point, only four of the disciples’ names have been mentioned, along with the unnamed disciple (assumed to be John). The synoptic gospels do not mention Nathanael, but instead list Bartholomew in listings after Phillip. Most Bible scholars believe this to be one and the same individual.
