“You will see greater things than that.” He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.” John 1:50b-51 NIV

What is Jesus telling Nathaniel and the other to be disciples, and us today herein? Nowhere after Jesus’s baptism do we read of the heavens being opened and angels ascending and descending upon Him.

One must realize that scripture does include symbolism and is not necessarily to all be interpreted literally word for word.

So, what might Christ mean herein?

Quite possibly the opening of heaven is symbolic of God’s favor poured upon those who belong to Him. Jesus is thus saying that many blessings are poured upon those who choose to follow God.

The ascending and descending of the angels might be interpreted as the protection of God upon those who are His. I am sure you’ve heard the term guardian angel. So, angels guard over (protect) those who are children of God.

Yes, through our Lord we are protected and truly receive blessings from our Father in Heaven. Live knowing that our Lord tells us so!
