Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.” John 1:19-20 NIV

It might seem a bit odd to answer a question indirectly by making a statement in the negative. In the case of John the Baptist though this is an answer showing his character. John immediately puts attention on the Messiah and not himself by the response he gave to those sent.

When we share Christ in the world, do we fall into the trap of putting some focus on us and that which we do? If so, we must stop and reevaluate. Our attention must be on Christ. We must let the indwelling Holy Spirit lead us in that which we share. We do not need to receive recognition for that which we do. All the recognition that we need comes to us from Christ for serving Him. Pray that the Holy Spirit will direct your words and actions when sharing Christ with others!
