They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” John 1:21-22 NIV

If you are an elder one, as I am, you may recall a television show which ran from 1960 through 1967 called What’s My Line? A panel would ask questions of a guest with the goal of naming the guest’s occupation. The final guest of the night would be a celebrity, and the panelists would be blindfolded for questions and answers.

So, those sent to John wished to know what was his line of work. What was his purpose in what he did? They had to give an answer to those who sent them.

We know who Christ is and His purpose in coming to earth. We also know the purpose of the ministry of the Baptist, to prepare the way for the coming of the Messiah. Thanks be to God for His plan for our salvation and instruction.
