Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said. Mark 15:36 NIV
This someone was quite possibly one of the Roman soldiers, as the drink they offered to Christ in response to His “I am thirsty” (John 19:28) was the normal drink of the Roman soldiers. Even this event was prophesied (See Psalm 69:12) Is it not amazing that there were so many different prophesies about events which would occur in the life of Christ, with each of them being fulfilled? The last part of the comment within the verse would also seem to be a probable statement made by a Roman soldier, not allowing any of the bystanders to get too close to the condemned men who were being crucified.
When our time comes to leave this earth, hopefully the focus of our mind is a thirst for Jesus Christ. While you are able, thirst for Christ and His word. The cup to drink that you will receive on the other side of this life will contain a drink far beyond that which can be offered here on earth.
