Was He Foresaken?

And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). Mark 15:34 NIV

Was Christ truly forsaken by God the Father? Absolutely not!

These words uttered here by Christ were first prophetically uttered by King David more than 700 years prior to Christ’s birth. For a truly vivid prophetic reading of the crucifixion of our Lord please read Psalm 22.

Our Lord was near death, and very weakened. He had been betrayed by one of His own, had witnessed all His disciples fleeing in the garden. He had been brutally beaten, mocked, and nailed to a wooden cross, a truly brutal form of execution. Is it not a wonder that He might think that the Father had forsaken Him too?

Christ became sin for us all as He hung on the cross. He was the substituted lamb who took our place. God hates sin, and thus He hated the sin which His Son became on our behalf. So, it appeared as if the Son was forsaken by the Father, but He was not. The sin which He bore upon Himself was that which the Father despised and which would require the death of the Son.

No, Christ was never forsaken by the Father. If we belong to Christ, He shall never forsake us!
