Does this passage not appear to contradict Luke 23:40 in which one of those crucified with Christ rebuked the other and asked Christ to remember him when He came into His kingdom?

The answer is no. Remember that Christ was initially crucified around 9 A.M. and died around 3 P.M. He thus hung on the cross for approximately 6 hours. Much can happen to one’s mind and what they think over a 6 hour time span, particularly when one is dying. God works mysteriously in the hearts and minds of those who belong to Him. The repentant robber belonged to God and over the time period which He hung dying, His heart came to see Christ as who He truly is! What a wonderful gift for this man. He was seized from the jaws of eternal death and is with His Savior in paradise. Never underestimate the power of God and His ability to work on the human heart. All it takes is a small seed planted, a heart which has not been blinded to the point of eternal death. Share the word of God and let His amazing power do the rest!
