Pompous And Useless

Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. Mark 14:43 NIV

Notice that the chief priests, teachers of the law, and the elders, the pompous ones, did not come to arrest Jesus. No, instead they sent soldiers and others, armed with swords and clubs. I call them pompous as they were not concerned about anyone other than themselves. They sought the approval and recognition from man and really cared nothing about God’s desires.

I also note that the soldiers and the crowd were armed with swords and clubs. How useless and unnecessary. If Christ had wanted to escape the situation these weapons would have been totally useless. Christ gave Himself willingly over to the hands of these who came to arrest Him, as He knew that the hour of His suffering was at hand.

And finally, there is the stinging act of the betrayer, the one who kissed him, the one who had spent three years in His presence, following Him, listening to Him, and learning from Him. This was all in vain to the lost soul of Judas but was meant to be as part of the plan of salvation. Yes, betrayal was part of the plan of mankind’s salvation.
