Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Mark 14:37-38 NIV

Even as He anguishes in the garden, Christ is at work, teaching His disciples, and us today as well.

Christ tells us that when dealing with temptation we must watch and pray. Temptation shall come to each of us. The world bombards us with desires for instant gratification. We must be alert to this and not allow it to get the better of us. We must also pray continually that we not be led into temptation but be delivered from evil. The indwelling Holy Spirit provides the desire to do as the Lord asks of us. The problem is our flesh. It is weak. It is so very weak. The devil knows this, and will attack the flesh, luring with desire to fulfill for ourselves at the cost of disobeying God. So, we must be alert, pray often, listen to the indwelling Holy Spirit, and be aware of the weakness of the flesh. When we do succumb to sin, we can go to Christ with a repentant, humble heart, seeking forgiveness and restoration. Christ is always there for us!
