What An Odd Thing To Do

When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.” They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?” “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me. The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.” Mark 14:17-21 NIV

What an odd thing to do in the midst of a celebration. To tell those with whom you are celebrating that one of them is about to betray you, one of those who has spent the last three years in your presence, learning from you. Do you think that this would not bring up suspicion amongst the group as to who the traitor might be? How would they then each be able to trust each other?

Jesus shared this forthcoming event with the twelve as something for them to remember when He was taken from them. Once again He foretold of an event to help strengthen their faith in Him, particularly after the forthcoming events occurred. The eleven were going to be the beginning of the new church, the leaders who would spread the Good News about Jesus Christ.

Christ also wanted Judas to know that He was not pulling the wool over the Lord’s eyes. He knew that which Judas had intended to do. It would have been better for the man if he had never been born. It was much too late though for him, as Satan had already taken the throne of his heart.

Remember always that Christ is Lord. He foretold of much. He is Your Savior and Your Lord!
