Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” Mark 12:41-44 NIV
What point was Christ attempting to convey to His disciples and to us today within this passage? I believe it is the issue of trust. Since the wealthy herein provided from their excess, it tells me that they relied upon, or trusted in their wealth and that which could be accomplished through it. The poor lady however gave what little she had. I believe she knew that God would provide for her need. Her trust was in Him and not in money.
Money is the enslavement of many today, just as it was in the time when our Savior walked this earth. But we are meant to place our trust in God. He is truly the only One that can provide what we truly need. God has always sought our trust. The more we trust in Him, the closer we grow to Him, and the more His power can be released in and through us. Can you relate a time when you truly trusted in God, and He did not provide? I know that I cannot come up with any time He did not provide when I sincerely trusted in Him. Why are we so unable to trust? Let go and trust in God.
