Whose Laws?

As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.” Mark 12:38-40 NIV

Why would the teachers of the law be punished severely? At least two things were wrong in that which they did. First, they taught more of man-made laws than on the laws of God. How could they help teach about God if their focus was on man-made laws? Secondly these men sought more the approval and recognition of fellow men than they sought the approval of their maker. They placed the approval of man over that of God.

So, where is our focus today on obedience to laws? Yes, we must be law abiding citizens, but first our focus must be on obedience to the laws of God. When you think of obedience to laws, where do you focus first? Is it on the laws of your creator, or is it on the laws of mankind? We must focus first on being obedient to God. It is too easy to be caught up in that which is of this world, including man-made laws. Make sure that your first priority lies with God. Be obedient to the Savior. Live for Him!
