Jesus then began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed. Mark 12:1-5 NIV
We are all tenants. The earth and all creation belong to the Lord, who created all. We have a tenancy equal to our human time span. God asks us to rule over the earth for the betterment of His kingdom. God wants to receive a share in that which we receive from the vineyard. Why should we not provide it to Him, for without Him there would be no vineyard, and there would be no human race. Oh, but we get caught up in the I, me, mine and the possessions to which we can so easily become attached. Only in giving back to God can we be free, free from enslavement to possessions, to that which is of this world. Be a tenant who gives back to God!
