They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?” Mark 11:27-28 NIV
These men who questioned Jesus were not ignorant. They knew by what authority Jesus did the things He did. They knew it was not the evil one who gave Him His power. The fact is that they did not choose to accept the truth because it did not align with that which they taught. They wanted to believe they already had their access to heaven. They were not willing to make the change required to be born again. They did not have hearts which sought humility and righteousness. They just wanted to find a reason to accuse Jesus that they might rid themselves of Him. These poor men did not know the fate that awaited them. They would all stand before the judgement seat, each being judged according to their beliefs and actions. We can question the authority of man, but not that of God.
