Be Gentle Always

      Let your gentle spirit [your graciousness, unselfishness, mercy, tolerance, and patience] be known to all people. The Lord is near.  (Philippians 4:5 Amplified Bible)

     When we read this verse, we find that there are two separate ideas listed.  The verse starts out describing what gentleness really is.  It shows us that our gentleness is to be so real that is can be seen by all people in our everyday lives.  Gentleness is a Fruit of the Spirit and is always with us but, we need to learn how to put this to use.  Patience, another Fruit of the Spirit, is also listed here, proving that all these words come from our spirit.

     The second sentence in the verse says, “The Lord is near.”  These two sentences may seem strange together in one verse, but they are both very important.  Knowing that the Lord is near reminds us that we are to be gentle all the time, in every situation, because the Lord is always near us.  As believers, He is always with us, so we need to show our gentleness as He shows His gentleness to us. 

     Some versions of the Bible say, “The Lord is coming soon.”  This also shows us that we need to be gentle in our circumstances because Jesus is coming and since we don’t know the day or hour, we need to be gentle all the time.  We need to be showing Christ to all.

Lord, please help me today to show the gentleness to others that You have shown me.  Remind me that You are coming back for me, so I need to be gentle in all situations.  Thank You.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
