We Need More Than Our Resources

“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied. He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. About four thousand were present. Mark 8:5-9a NIV

Just as when Jesus fed the five thousand, here before feeding the four thousand Jesus asks His disciples what resources are available for the task at hand. As prayer is a two way communication, when we come to Jesus with a request, we should be ready to hear Him ask what is available. Why would Jesus ask us that being as He already knows? He does so that we realize what we already have available. We can then see that although we do have resources, on our own they are not enough to complete the task. What is missing? The presence and the power of our Savior. Christ wants us to realize that we need Him in our lives, and this we so dearly do need. Jesus is only hindered by our lack of faith in Him and what He can do. We should not expect Jesus to just instantaneously meet or requests. He wants a relationship with us that includes back and forth communication. He wants us to know that with what we have and His saving power so much can be accomplished. What we need to have is a trusting and believing heart, a heart which has been given to Him. Give your heart to the Savior.
