A Sign From Heaven

The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. He sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” Mark 8:11-12 NIV

I wonder what the Pharisees sought as a sign from heaven. Actually I don’t believe they sought a sign at all. They were just using it as an attempt to trap Jesus. Notice in the passage that Jesus sighed deeply. What could He do to convince these men as to His true identity? He could do nothing, as their hearts were like stone.

A sign from heaven was actually shown though. The love of the Heavenly Father was shown through the sign of the incarnate Son of God, Jesus Christ, being sent to offer salvation to all those who would believe in Him. Jesus tells us that no one has ever ascended into heaven except for the one who descended from heaven, which was the Son of God. What more perfect sign from heaven could have been sent than Jesus Christ Himself? Salvation offered to mankind through this man who spoke to the Pharisees. No wonder Christ sighed deeply. He knew the forthcoming fate of these and all unbelievers.

Today is no different. Many seek non-spiritual blessings from Christ, such as a better job, a fancier car…you name it, they seek it. But what Christ wishes for us to seek is that which is spiritual, such as a deeper understanding of God and His love for us. Do not let yourself be enslaved to seeking after the materialistic. Seek a true understanding of God. Seek that which is eternal.
