His Family Said What?

Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.” Mark 3:20-21 NIV

Does family in the above refer to the earthly family of Christ, or to His ministry family? I don’t think the scripture makes it quite clear. Commentaries seem to have differences as well. Was their statement that He was out of His mind, just words uttered to get Him out of the situation, or were there really some doubts about the total sanity of Jesus on the part of some who were close to Him? I believe it is a combination of the two. I do think they wanted to relocate Jesus to a less crowded and safer place. I also think there was some doubt about His total sanity. That does fit in with the fact that God’s ways are not man’s nor are God’s thoughts the thoughts of man. How foolish that one would think that they know better than God what is needed in any circumstance. Haven’t we learned enough times that when we rely upon self, we set ourselves up for disaster. God truly knows what is best in all cases. If we truly trust in Him, we can rest in the assurance that God’s will shall be accomplished for us. We can feel a peace and joy which will not exist when we rely upon self.
