And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.” Mark 3 :22 NIV
The scribes and Pharisees surely felt threatened by Jesus. This man taught about God in a manner much different than their preaching. They knew that if this man attracted a large audience, their teaching manner would be in serious trouble. What made matters all the worse is that He was curing many of diseases and casting out demons. They knew that they had to come up with an answer to what this man was doing. They needed a good time to make good accusations against Him. Here was a perfect time. Some people who had been following Jesus just made a statement that He was out of His mind. So now was a great time to bring in their accusation, which needed to deal with all that He was doing. So the teachers of the law claimed that it was by the prince of demons that Jesus was casting out demons. Maybe this thought would put doubt in the hearts of those who wondered who this Jesus was, the one performing many miracles and preaching in a totally different manner to those in authority.
Today there are those who follow Christ, those who totally ignore Him, and those who are antagonistic and persecute those who follow Christ. They do so out of ignorance and because they feel their way of life is threatened by Him. Actually, they are threatened not by Christ, but by their manner of living. Christ offers an invitation for salvation, yet many choose not to accept it. They themselves threaten their own eternal destiny. Share the Good News. There are many souls whose fate hangs in the balance.
