As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. Mark 1:16-20 NIV

What is the greatest message which has ever been meant for the hearing of mankind? Without any doubt it is the message of the Good News of Jesus Christ. So, if this message is so important, why did Jesus choose four fishermen as His first disciples? Why instead did He not choose great orators, or people with great knowledge or respect?

Christ knew exactly what He was doing in choosing those He did to be His disciples. Great orators, or those with an abundance of knowledge would have had their own ideas on how to get the message around about Jesus. But this is the plans of man, and not the plans of God. Jesus was looking for the one with a sincere heart, one who knew that on his own would not be able to share the Good News, but through the power of God living within could quite adequately spread the Good News. Jesus wanted men to whom He could teach God’s ways, not men who would try to tell Him what God’s ways were. God has chosen the humble and meek to inherit the kingdom, not the wise and learned of earthly ways.

Just as Christ chose these four fishermen as His first disciples, He also has chosen you to be a bearer of God’s message to the world. He has provided you with gifts. Utilize that which you have been given to share the message with the world. It is God’s plan for you!
