Lazarus And The Rich Man

A rich man dressed in purple and fine linen,

Enjoying the pleasure of this mortal world,

Little did he know that his death awaited,

To which he would soon be hurled

The poor man Lazarus with painful sores,

Who for food could only desire the crumbs of bread,

Which fell from the rich man’s table of abundance,

Nothing more he could afford for his hunger instead

 

When friends unnumbered caring with lavish,

May have comforted the rich man when he would be sick,

The painful oozing sores of the humble Lazarus,

The dogs of the streets would come and lick

Then when death visited them both alike,

To different destinations they both did go,

As Lazarus rested in Abraham’s bosom,

The flames of hell awaited the rich man we know

O what a joy had Lazarus in eternal bliss,

Resting in peace now in his happy days,

The rich man instead was wriggling in pain,

Suffering the penalty for his sinful ways

The flames burn me and I am sore thirsty,

Can the moist hand of Lazarus cool down my burn?

This plea of the Rich man was turned down by Father Abraham

For Heaven’s gulf from hell always stood stern

Can you send back Lazarus, to caution my brothers,

For they too tread in sinful paths I’d been,

Could the testimony of Lazarus save my brothers?

And they could walk in holiness and before the Lord be clean

This is in vain and will not work,

Let thy own on the earth heed to the prophets and the saints,

And if they fail to heed the Word of God through them,

Even Lazarus’s reprove they would disdain

O what a pity! Yet this is true

The pleasures of this world one day will end,

And if we stay not true with the Lord God,

Our eternity in torment we shall spend

Yet even if in sorrow and pain be these earthly days,

Let’s be always true and faithful to our King,

For rest is assured for all who stay true to the Lord,

Eternally songs of joy they shall ever sing.
