Lord God,

I thank you for giving me the gift of speech,

That with this gift,

I can communicate with others and build relationships,

I can encourage, comfort, challenge, advise and build up others through the words I speak,

And I can praise your name and tell others about you,

But I also acknowledge that this gift can be used for evil,

That through my words,

I can provoke others and destroy relationships,

I can tell lies and insults, spread rumours, cause divisions and bring people down,

And I can profane your name and lead others astray,

So Lord, please give me wisdom and self-control in how I use this gift,

That I would keep my speech blameless and free from profanity,

And avoid joining in with conversations full of gossip and insults,

Please help me to be gentle and respectful in my speech with others,

That I would be able to deflect anger and avoid senseless arguments,

And respond in love to those who would speak ill to me,

I pray that you would help me to focus on building up others through my words,

And to keep sharing your truth with others around me,

And please give me the strength and courage to also challenge or rebuke others,

When it is right to do so,

I pray also that in all my conversations with those who don’t yet know you,

Help me to speak gracefully and to season my speech with salt,

That I would know how to answer others for the hope that I have in you,

And that my words would draw them to want to know you more.
