The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” So, they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.” Matthew 27:6-10 NIV

The Jewish leaders were hypocrites. It was there doing that the money paid to Judas was blood money. But, I am sure they did not see it that way.

A few things needed to occur for the prophecy of Jeremiah to happen. First, Judas needed to demand that he be paid for turning Jesus over to the leaders. Secondly, there needed to be an agreement as to the amount to be paid, which happened to be exactly the number of coins of which Jeremiah prophesied. Third, there had to be regret on the part of Judas, that he would wish to return the coins associated with the evil deed which he committed. Fourth, the leaders had to come up with the disposition for usage of these coins, which just so happened to align with that which had been contained in Jeremiah’s prophecy. Although all of this occurred because Jesus was betrayed, the Lord did not, through His own actions cause these specific things to occur. What are the odds that all of these things would have happened, that the prophecy be fulfilled? The prophecies concerning Jesus were all to be fulfilled, despite insurmountable odds.
