Remorse Without Repentance

Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor. When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.” “What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.” So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. Matthew 27:1-5 NIV

After seeing the true intentions of the Jewish leaders, Judas was filled with remorse with that which He had done. He no longer had a desire for the money he had been paid. It was a reminder to him of the grave deed which he had committed.

Unlike Peter, who had wept bitterly after having denied the Lord, we see no mention here of weeping by Judas. He had no attachment to the Lord, like Peter did. Since Judas was not united to the Lord, there was no sense for repentance. The only answer which Judas could find was to eliminate the terrible remorse he felt by ending his life.

The believer, through true repentance, can approach the Lord, seeking reconciliation and forgiveness. To those who do not belong to Christ, and who will not choose to accept Him, there is no relief available. The power of sin will continue to control such an individual. They are imprisoned to their own sinful nature.

Repent before the Lord. Seek His forgiveness and reconciliation. Be united to Him.
