Seeking False Evidence

 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome. The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally, two came forward and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’” Matthew 26:57-61 NIV

The leaders were seeking false evidence against Jesus to put Him to death. How interesting that is when a court of law is to seek what is real evidence in a trial. But, what we have here is a mockery of a trial. Jesus had done nothing wrong. Everything which Jesus spoke was truth. And that is exactly why the leaders wished to kill Him, because they could not accept the truth. It did not fit into their preconceived idea of what was the truth.

What is just as ironic is that they could not even find two witnesses that were in agreement about some form of false evidence against the Lord. But, the leaders were determined that they would find some reason that they might have Jesus executed.

We must be careful in sharing the Lord with others, to make sure that we present no false evidence, nothing which is not true about Him. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we shall share that which is truth about our Lord. We must share the truth, always. There are souls which need to be saved. Only Christ can save them, and we can be of help by sharing about the Lord. Do so as a humble servant of our Master.
