While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Matthew 26:26-30 NIV

The Lord shared the bread with the eleven disciples as a symbol, representing His body, which would be sacrificed as an atonement for the forgiveness of sins. He also shared with them the cup of wine, representing the blood He would shed on the behalf of many.

Today we partake of the bread and the wine. When we accept the bread we agree that we truly are individually, and collectively the body of Christ, and we are accepting Christ into ourselves. We make this choice as He is our savior and redeemer. We do this in remembrance of Him.

In partaking of the cup of wine, we drink from the cup of salvation, the sacrificial blood of our Lord. By doing so we should recognize our need to live a life of sacrifice, a life dedicated to the Lord, and His will, and not our will.

Partaking of the bread and the wine is truly a reminder of our Lord, and the ultimate sacrifice He made on our behalf. Partaking of the bread and the wine should be done in a humble and reverent manner.
