Why Don't We Help?

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” Matthew 25:41-46 NIV

Why is it that we would gladly be willing to help Jesus when He calls upon us, yet, we hesitate in helping our fellow man? Is it because it is not Jesus? Do we think to ourselves “What will this person be able to do in return for me?” Maybe we just feel we don’t have the time, or we are apprehensive for some other reason. Don’t we see and understand that in so doing, we are definitely not doing as we are direct by the Lord. In so doing we would not be able to claim that we are working for the advancement of the kingdom of God.

We need to view others in the manner that Christ sees them. Christ tells us to love our enemies. If that is true, then who are we to determine whom we should and should not help? We can refuse to help causes that are in direct conflict with Christianity, but, helping one in need, we must be willing to do.

We would not want to be put amongst the goats, on the left side of Christ, when He comes again.

When you miss an opportunity to help someone in need, take these to the Lord. Ask him to give you a heart that is sensitive to the needs of others. Ask Him to give you a heart like His. Look, and see the face of Christ in those who need your help.
