When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, “As you know, the Passover is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.” Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. “But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.” Matthew 26:1-5 NIV

Jesus issues a final warning to His disciples, letting them know that His death was imminent and was about to occur. He did not want this to be a mystery to them.

At this time, the plot to kill Jesus was being planned. They wanted to arrest Him secretly, but, as we know, the best that they would be able to do is arrest Him in the presence of His disciples, and even then, only with the assistance of the one who betrayed Him.

Although it does not specifically say so in this reading, I also believe they planned to kill Jesus in private. They certainly did not succeed in doing so.

Everything that happened in the death of our Lord was according to the plan of the heavenly Father. What the leaders thought was their success in having Jesus killed was actually the plan of our Father in heaven, and served an ultimate purpose, of which the Jewish leaders had no clue.

Our Lord was only in the tomb for three days, and His raising from the dead put an end to the real intent of the Jewish leaders, which went beyond just the removal of Christ from the living.
