“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” Matthew 25:31-39 NIV
What Jesus tells us herein goes hand in hand with the two greatest commandments. First, we are to love God with our whole heart, whole mind, and whole soul. Assuredly, one who does this would certainly come to help Jesus if He were hungry, thirsty, needed clothing, was a stranger to the area, or was in prison. We would do so because this is our Lord, the one through whom we have salvation and blessings abundantly. We live our lives for Him, and would relish the thought of being able to provide some aid to Him.
We also must adhere to the second commandment, to love our neighbor as ourselves. By providing for our neighbor who is in need, we are honoring and obeying this second commandment. To top it off, when we help someone in need, Jesus tells us that it is as if we did the deed for Him. To do this should be a part of the way we live our lives. Our lives aren’t lived for our well-being, they are to be in service to the Lord.
We shall be rewarded immensely for living our lives in this manner. Keep your eyes open. Be prepared to help those who are in need. Look at their face, and see the face of the Master therein, for, as you have helped the least of any, then, You have done so for the Lord.
