In Matthew 25:1-13 we read the parable told by Christ of the ten virgins, and how they prepared for the coming of the bridegroom.

Mankind is like the ten virgins in the parable. I wish that the ratio of the wise to the foolish were at least the same for mankind as it was in the parable of our Lord. Would it not be nice if half of mankind truly believed in the Lord?

I would compare the lamps that each of the ten virgins carried, as the heart, mind, and soul of each of us. The oil which was carried by the five wise virgins is like the spiritual sight of those who belong to Christ. All that Christ provides for the believer is the “fuel” needed to activate the spiritual being within us. Without Christ living in us, we would be like the five foolish virgins, who did not take any oil with them. The heart, mind, and soul of one without Christ is spiritually dead.

The period of the virgins waiting for the coming of the bridegroom is like the life of each of us. Our beliefs, the way we live our life, what is important to us, all that makes us who we are, reveal our true being. Are we one of the wise virgins, or one of the foolish ones?

The appearance of the bridegroom is equated to the return of our Lord. When He comes again, it will be too late for the foolish virgins to change, to have the oil needed to provide light. The Lord shall examine each heart, mind and soul. He will know whether each of us is like one of the wise or foolish virgins.

Make sure to have that oil with your lamp as you wait for the bridegroom.
