What Shall the Master's Servant Do?

“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 24:45-51 NIV

We first must understand what Christ is not saying here. He is not saying that we are saved by our works. Man is saved by belief in Christ as the Son of God, who gave His life as the perfect sacrifice for our redemption, the forgiveness of our sinful nature. Works are important though, as faith, without works is dead. How can someone say they believe in Christ, yet live a life that is of this world?

The faithful and wise servant that Christ speaks about here is the one who is about His Master’s work. This one works for the advancement of God’s kingdom. This one gives of themselves, rather than being engrossed in self. They share the Good News of Jesus Christ with others. They pray for others. They read God’s word, and pray often to the Lord. They seek communion with God.

Some may stray, though, thinking that Christ will not come again now, and thus they can get involved with worldly desires. They need to be very careful. This is a trap, set by the evil one. We do not know the day, nor the hour of our Lord’s return.

Time is a precious commodity, and we must use it wisely in doing the work that each of us has been given by the Lord. Do not waste your time. You do not know the amount of time you have been given. Work on the harvest. May your work always be pleasing to the Lord.
