You Know Not When

“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” Matthew 24:42-44 NIV

Earlier, in verse 36 of this chapter of Matthew, the Lord said that neither the angels in heaven, nor He, knew the exact hour of His coming. That is only known by the Heavenly Father.

We need not know the hour of our Lord’s coming. What could that add to the work we need to do for Him? It adds nothing. If someone knew, they might spend time on things other than the Lord’s work. “Oh, I can do that later, when it is closer to the time of the Lord’s coming again.” That is not what is expected of us. We are to always be about our Lord’s work. It is part of our relationship with Him. He provides for us, while we abide in Him, and do the work He gives to us. Our eternal future has been won by the Lord, for us. We need to help with bringing others to a point where the Lord will take over in bringing them into His flock.

Keep your focus on Jesus. Commune with Him. Read God’s word. Pray for others and share the Good News with them. You shall then be prepared for the Lord’s coming.
