They Would Not Come

Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. “Then he sent some more servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’ “But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business. The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city." Matthew 22:1-7 NIV

Jesus was sent to the Jews, as their Savior and redeemer, but, they would not accept Him. Some chose to ignore Him. Many of the Jewish leaders, though, hated Him and wanted to kill Him. What He taught was in direct conflict with their beliefs and desires. The Jewish leaders were interested in obeying man-made laws, and not following the decrees of their creator. They continued, after the death and resurrection of Christ, to persecute those who followed in the Lord’s steps.

The burning of the city quite possibly was in reference to the forthcoming destruction of Jerusalem in approximately one-half century. This also can be considered to be in reference to the forthcoming eternal destruction of all those who do not belong to Christ. Their destruction will be an eternity, banished from the presence of God.

We, as followers of Christ, must pray for those who do not follow the Lord, praying that they will have a change of heart. We must continue to spread the Good News.
