When do you know a friend?
Is it when you both have
Something to smile about?
That isn’t enough
To probe into the hidden heart of any one!
Is it when you both have
Something to share?
This is too mean either
To stir your emotion for;
And make a popular pronouncement
“ This is my friend”
Is it when you are in a common course,
Or common plight or common progress?
This can’t prove to the slightest doubt,
That you are really friends indeed!
The longer you live together under a favourable cloud
Isn’t good enough
To know a beloved friend.
Let us see when you are
Both climbing the mountain
And your reserved strength is exhausting.
Let us see when
You’re both wading the stream
And you cannot cope with the speed;
For your arms are too weak
To make a motion:
Will a true friend
Comfortably leave you there?
Let us see when you
Have no portion to spare
For a share,
Can you still be friends?
Let us see when you are
A bit ahead in success
How raging is the envy and the strife?
Or when you are a bit in retrogress,
What will the glory
Of his pride sing for song.
Friend indeed,
See what others do not see in you.
See fewer faults in you
Yet corrects.
But sees much of your strength to fortify.
Does not hold the popular opinion
But do Love, I mean Love
Is the pivot of your relationship.
Shares your success,
Mourn your sorrow,
Sing your Joy,
Scares your fears,
And give you confidence
By his inspired commitment.
By the strength of a beloved friend,
You will dread no foes,
You will scorn embarrassment,
Conquer lands
And reach places
Greater than your mean-self can normally attain.
But are you a true friend indeed!
